Pediatric researchers leading the fight against COVID-19

UBC and BCCH Department of Pediatrics is one of the leaders in helping fight this disease. As governments and research funding agencies have made it a priority to fund research for COVID-19, one of our own pediatricians, Dr. Srinivas Murthy was successful in obtaining a Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR) grant to conduct research on how best to treat the disease. Dr. Murthy is a physician with the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist and clinical associate professor at UBC. He is also the co-chair World Health Organization’s (WHO) clinical research theme, responsible for refining and implementing a number of priorities related to clinical management of the outbreak.

Dr. Manish Sadarangani, also a pediatrician in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Director of the Vaccine Evaluation Centre, assistant professor and Sauder Chair of Infectious Diseases at UBC is working with Dr. Murthy to develop formal treatment guidelines for the WHO.

Dr. Laura Sauvé is a pediatric infectious disease specialist and has played an integral role in leading infection prevention and control efforts at BC Children’s and Women’s Health Centre over the past few months. Like many care providers and staff, Laura has worked incredibly long hours for weeks on end, including cancelling plans to spend time with family in March knowing she was needed to help lead the fight.
