Dr. Sylvia Cheng has been appointed to the Division of Hematology/Oncology/BMT at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor. Dr. Cheng received her medical degree from the University of British Columbia followed by her Postgraduate Residency Training in Pediatrics at The Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto in 2011. She recently completed her Postgraduate Residency Subspecialty Training in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the The Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto in 2014. She is currently in the process of completing a Masters of Science in the Health Practitioner Teacher Education program from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, focusing on assessment in postgraduate medical education. Her specific clinical interests are in pediatric neuro-oncology and brain tumours.
Throughout her training, she has been active in clinical research and has presented her research at national and international oncology meetings. She expects to continue these scholarly endeavours in both clinical oncology research and medical education throughout her career.
Dr. Sim Grewal has been appointed the to Emergency Department, Pediatrics at the rank of Clinical Associate Professor. Dr. Grewal is also the Medical Director for the Emergency Department at BC Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Grewal received her medical degree from the University of British Columbia in 1999. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Alberta in 2003 and fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine in 2005 also at the University of Alberta. During her residency program, she was Pediatric Chief Resident. Dr. Grewal joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta in 2005 as staff and served as the Assistant Director of the Pediatric Emergency Department at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton from 2010 onwards. Dr. Grewal was an Associate Professor with the University of Alberta, and has been extensively involved with presenting, teaching, and curriculum development of U of A’s Pediatric Emergency Medicine Residency Program. She also has a considerable publication record.
Dr. Grewal is happy to be returning to Vancouver, and is very excited to join the Department of Pediatrics and the Pediatric Emergency Division at BCCH.
Dr. Melissa Harvey has been appointed to the Division of Hematology/Oncology/BMT at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor.
Dr. Harvey is a new graduate from Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT at BC Children’s Hospital. She is excited to be joining the Division of Hematology/Oncology/BMT as an Attending physician. She will be involved primarily in Oncology with a focus on pediatric sarcomas. She also has an interest in Medical Education and is in the midst of pursuing a Masters in Health Professions Education degree (MHPE) through Maastricht University.
Originally from Ontario, she graduated with her MD and completed her Pediatric Residency training through the University of Ottawa.
Dr. Brendan Hursh has been appointed to the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Pediatrics at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor.
Dr. Hursh was born in Whitehorse, Yukon and subsequently raised in Calgary, Alberta. He attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City where he received his medical degree in 2007. He and his wife then relocated to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he completed his pediatric residency and chief residency. Now in Vancouver, he has completed three years of fellowship in endocrinology at BCCH. During his endocrinology fellowship, he was selected by the Department to be Chief Fellow.
During this past year, he also completed the coursework for a Master of Health Science degree at UBC. His primary research project has been investigating changes in both inflammatory markers and the autonomic nervous system in children with obesity. He is very grateful for the opportunity to continue with BC Children’s Hospital and to join the Endocrine and Diabetes Unit.
Dr. Melissa Lambeth has been appointed to the Department of Pediatrics, Division of General Pediatrics at the rank of Clinical Instructor.
Dr. Lambeth studied chemistry at the University of Western Ontario and completed her medical degree at the University of Toronto. She then completed her Pediatrics Residency at the University of Calgary. She recently moved with her family to British Columbia to work as Pediatrician. She is excited to be joining the Department!
Dr. Deepak Manhas has been appointed to the Division of Neonatology, at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor.
Dr. Manhas received his medical degree at UBC, Faculty of Medicine in 2007. He completed his Pediatric Residency Program at BCCH in 2011 and Neonatology-Perinatal Medicine Subspecialty Residency at BCCH in 2013 where he was both Chief Pediatric Resident and Chief Fellow. He completed an additional year of fellowship training in Neonatal Resuscitation and Simulation at Oregon Health & Science University. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Health Professions at Maastricht University. In addition, he is a Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES) Fellow.
Dr. Julia Panczuk has been appointed to the Division of Neonatology, at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor.
Dr. Panczuk was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at Queen’s University and pursued a career in medicine by obtaining her MD at the University of Toronto. She completed her Pediatrics residency through the University of British Columbia, followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal medicine at the University of Toronto. Julia procured a third year of fellowship as a Clinical Research Fellow at the Hospital for Sick Children where she acted as Chief Administrative fellow for the University of Toronto fellowship program. She then embarked on a Masters of Public Health through the University of Liverpool, and pursued research activity in her main area of interest, which is neonatal nutrition.
Her project interests include investigation of the microbiome among very low birth weight infants, novel biomarkers of gastrointestinal inflammation, and neurodevelopmental outcomes of small for gestational age infants. She has an interest in neonatal follow-up, as well as in medical education of trainees in neonatology.
Dr. Shannon Wires has been appointed to the Department of Pediatrics, Division of General Pediatrics and is a community paediatrician based in Kelowna, BC.
Dr. Wires graduated with her medical degree from the University of Toronto and completed her paediatric residency at McMaster University and the University of Manitoba. She is a clinical leader in the newly-formed paediatric clinical teaching unit (CTU) at Kelowna General Hospital, and an enthusiastic teacher of medical students and residents at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus. She has broad clinical interests and enjoys the busy, diverse practice in the central Okanagan.
Dr. Tiffany Wong has been appointed to the Division of Allergy & Immunology as Clinical Instructor. Dr. Wong completed her medical degree at the University of British Columbia, followed by her pediatric residency at the University of Calgary, Alberta Children’s Hospital in 2012.
Highlights of her pediatric residency include a one year appointment as the Chief Resident of Education and completion of a Cochrane Review entitled ‘Combined and alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen therapy for febrile children’.
Dr. Wong completed her Allergy & Immunology fellowship at UBC’s Department of Pediatrics in June 2014. She will be working in the Allergy Clinic at the BC Children’s Hospital and plans to set up a community Allergy practice for both children and adults in the Greater Vancouver area.
