Faculty of Medicine Internal Canada Foundation for Innovation John R. Evans Leaders Fund Competition

The Faculty of Medicine has launched an internal Canada Foundation for Innovation John R. Evans Leaders Fund competition to distribute CFI funds.

Successful applicants will go forward to the UBC internal review for the CFI national October 2015 round.

Susan G. Komen announces call for research proposals from early career investigators on the following three programs:
- CCR grants provide support for hypothesis-driven research projects that have significant potential to advance our understanding of breast cancer, lead to reductions in breast cancer incidence and/or mortality, and move us toward the goal of a world without breast cancer.
- Award can be funded up to $300,000 over 2 years or $450,000 over 3 years.
- Applications are open to junior faculty members working at academic institutions who have no more than six years of experience within their faculty appointment.
- This grant seeks to attract and support promising scientists who are embarking on careers dedicated to breast cancer research. PDF grants provide support for basic research projects that have significant potential to advance our understanding of breast cancer, lead to reductions in breast cancer incidence and/or mortality, and move us toward the goal of a world without breast cancer.
- Funding can be granted up to $120,000 over 2 years or $180,000 over 3 years.
- Applications are open to postdoctoral fellows who have completed their doctoral degree and are at academic institutions, no more than 5 years after the date of their degree confirmation, or 5 years after completion of their residency (for physicians).
- Intended to establish and/or to sustain a training program for graduate students who are seeking careers dedicated to understanding and eliminating disparities in breast cancer outcomes across population groups.
- Funding level can be up to $135,000 per year for a maximum period of 3 years in a total amount of $405,000.
- Applications are open to researchers with a doctoral degree at academic institutions who are conducting breast cancer disparities research and are committed to support a training program with a minimum of 3 graduate students/trainees (those in a masters and/ or doctoral program) per year.

On behalf of the Clinical Advisory Committee of the Rare Diseases: Models and Mechanisms Network, we would like to invite applications from clinicians and clinician scientists who have discovered novel genes in patients with rare diseases and wish to collaborate with a model organism investigator who is able to carry out functional analysis on an orthologous gene in a model system.
Funds Available: A maximum of $25,000 will be awarded for each catalyst grant
Eligibility: Applications may be submitted by any investigator associated with a Canadian Institution.
Relevant Research Areas:
Three categories of Connection applications will be considered:
- Novel gene supported by genetic evidence (mutations in the same gene in unrelated patients with a similar phenotype) and functional data is being rapidly sought prior to publication.
- Candidate gene for a rare disease in a single patient/family/isolated population such that additional functional data is necessary to support disease-causation. Two types of candidate genes will be considered:

- Candidate gene has not previously been associated with disease; and,
- Novel mutation in known disease gene causing a very distinct disease secondary to a presumed alternate mechanism.
- Known disease gene that is of therapeutic or biological interest to a unique Canadian population or community (e.g. Hutterite, First Nation, French Canadian, patient advocacy group etc.).

- Therapeutic opportunities will include projects that propose to develop a model asset for drug screening or develop a model to evaluate efficacy of a treatment; and,
- Biological interest will include those genes published by a Canadian group for which further study has the potential to impact a new area of biology.

The Steacie Prize is a Canadian award of $10,000 presented once a year to a scientist or engineer of 40 years of age or less for outstanding scientific work carried out in Canada. To compete for this prize, a person must be nominated by a colleague. The winner is selected by a distinguished panel appointed annually by the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fund, a private foundation dedicated to the advancement of science and engineering in Canada.

The two major blood‐borne proteolytic cascades, complement and coagulation, cooperate to protect organisms against bleeding and infection. The past decade has seen major advances in delineating the molecular links between these systems that have resulted in at least one successful therapy for otherwise devastating diseases. I will discuss new pathways that are being uncovered in our lab that hopefully will yield effective new therapies.
