Dr. Miller is the 2023 recipient of the James H. Graham Award of Merit from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Steven Paul Miller, MDCM MAS FRCPC is a renowned physician-scientist leader, whose brain-imaging studies of critically-ill newborns identified the power of the early-life intensive care unit experience to shape the trajectory of brain development through childhood. His findings led a paradigm shift from brain injury as a fixed-event to a focus on “everyday” interventions that he showed are modifiable to promote brain maturation across the life-course.
The James H. Graham Award of Merit is awarded to individuals whose career achievements are outstanding, enduring, and reflective of the Royal College strategic priorities.
Dr. Graham served as the secretary-general of the Royal College for 24 years from 1953 to 1979 and he was much admired for his administrative skill and the wise guidance he gave to successive presidents and councils
In 1979, he was awarded the Order of Canada in 1987, the Council of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada recommended that an award of merit be given to a person whose outstanding career achievements that reflect the aims and objectives of the Royal College.
