UBC Department of Pediatrics awarded a 2018 Healthy Workplace Initiative Program (HWIP) Grant

The Healthy Workplace Initiatives Program (HWIP) is an annual fund available to UBC departments and units to support grassroots activities that promote well-being in the workplace.

There were a total of 62 applications submitted, totaling over $130,000 for an available fund of $100,000.  Funding was awarded to 49 departments and units.

In the Department of Pediatrics 2015 – 2020 STRATEGIC PLAN, we have stated that our faculty and staff are the most important assets within our Department.

Since 2015, one of our core strategic objectives was to unify our department by investing in our people, strengthening our resources and to improve our work environment.

With this funding we intend to continue to support our employee’s health and wellness goals with diverse group activities through our annual team building events such as the Vancouver Sun Run and the Pure Protein Night Race. New this year, is the department’s support of other events, like the upcoming BMO Marathon Relay Race, the Workout to Conquer Cancer, and our noon hour Health Speaker Series.

Based on a recent employee survey, respondents told us they would like a mix of strength training and yoga offered during the day.  Over the summer, the Department of Pediatrics will be launching a free 8 week noon hour fitness program. In the Fall, we will expand our programming to include Zumba, Pilates and Boot Camp.

So, keep an eye for the activities that interest you and sign up for one of them and meet some new people. Better yet, sign up with a few of your co-workers to keep each other motivated. We will be offering a lot of incentive prizes to encourage healthy competition in the department.
