The Weston Brain Institute is delighted to launch its Rapid Response 2015 program to provide seed funding for totally novel, high-risk, high-reward translational research ideas to catalyze the development of safe and effective treatments for neurodegenerative diseases of aging. Each project may receive up to $150,000 over 12-18 months

Applicants must be researchers or postdoctoral fellows, and developing a therapeutic and/or a tool to help accelerate the development of therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases of aging.

Vasculitis Foundation has launched the Research Grants Program, which supports research in vasculitis, covering Etiology/Pathogenesis (could include a broad range of studies of immunity, inflammation, or vascular biology), Epidemiology (including genetics), Diagnosis (including identification of disease subtypes), Treatment/Management (including therapeutics to treat vasculitis or prevent complications, biomarkers, and psychosocial outcomes).

Award is for one- or two-year seed grants of $50,000 per year.

Mechthild Esser Nemmers Prize in Medical Science is awarded to those whose body of research exhibits outstanding achievement in medical science as demonstrated by works of lasting significance. This biennial prize of $200,000 is one of the four Nemmers Prizes administered by Northwestern University. They are made possible by a generous endowment from Erwin and Frederic Nemmers. The Mechthild Esser Nemmers Prize was founded in honor of their mother.

Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a large multimeric protein that plays a key role in hemostasis. Deficiency or abnormalities of von Willebrand factor cause von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most common congenital bleeding disorder, with an estimated prevalence of up to 1% of the population. Recent studies have led to an improved understanding of the synthesis, release, proteolysis and cleavage of VWF as well as the genetic abnormalities in the different types of VWD. This talk will provide an overview of the structure and function of VWF and how new knowledge is shaping the laboratory approach to investigation of this common bleeding disorder.

The title of her presentation is “Mobility, Aging and Built Environment: Participatory Research on Neighbourhood Walkability with Photovoice and Environmental Audits”.

SPARC is hosting an information session for UBC researchers who are interested in applying to the NSERC Discovery Grants (DG) Program. Join us as we review the Notification of Intent, create an NSERC Canadian Common CV, and discuss the Review Criteria and Evaluation Groups for the program. Information about SPARC’s DG support and services will also be presented.

The information session is scheduled for Monday, June 29, 2015, from 1:00-3:00pm
