UBC Faculty of Medicine – Dr. Chew Wei Memorial Prize in Cancer Research  Deadline: December 13, 2013 4:00pm PDT The Inaugural Dr. Chew Wei MBBS [HK] FRCOG [ENG] Memorial Prize in Cancer Research establishes a prize, to a physician or scientist – whether in academia, government, non-profit organizations, or the private sector – who has made a transformational, internationally recognized contribution to the fight against cancer, with an emphasis on researchers whose achievements span the spectrum of health research, from the laboratory to clinical care to health systems and public policy. The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) is launching an internal Canada Research Chairs (CRC) competition to fill vacant Tier 2 CRCs who will go forward to the national CRC competition in April 2014.  The application deadline for this FoM internal competition is December 16, 2013. Alex’s Lemonade Stand – Young Investigator Award Deadline: December 16th, 2013 ALSF is committed to the next generation of pediatric cancer investigators! The Young Investigator Award provides start-up funds for new scientists at the end of their fellowship training or early in their research career. Developing an impactful line of research and a sustainable career in pediatric oncology research are key components of this grant program. The award is $100,000 over two years.  Please review the application guidelines.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand – Epidemiology Grants Deadline: December 16th, 2013; ALSF provides funding that will allow investigators to pursue novel and promising epidemiological approaches to understanding childhood cancers. New in 2014, we have expanded our eligible areas of investigation to include comparative effectiveness and outcomes research. Proposals for evaluating effectiveness of interventions related to prevention, detection and treatment of childhood cancer will be considered. Maximum $100,000 of direct costs will be awarded to applicants annually and a maximum of two years of funding may be requested. Please review the application guidelines.

Canadian Cancer Society – Prevention Research Grants Abstract registration deadline: January 15, 2014, Full application deadline: April 15, 2014 (note that abstract registrations must be submitted in order to submit a full application).  The goal of this grant program is to support and accelerate research and the application of new knowledge relevant to cancer prevention. Proposed projects must demonstrate a specific and defined potential for impact on cancer incidence; multidisciplinary collaboration is encouraged. Budgets awarded will not exceed $150,000 per year, for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years, to a maximum of $600,000 per grant. Please see website for details.

February 1, 2014, Medical Council of Canada (MCC) Research in Clinical Assessment Grant Competition The deadline for the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) Research in Clinical Assessment grant competition is Feb. 1, 2014. The purpose and priorities of the 2014 competition are the encouragement of innovations in the assessment of clinical competence or performance of students, postgraduate trainees or practitioners. Priority will be given to proposals that show promise in contributing to the knowledge and understanding of measurement in clinical assessment and to clinical program evaluation methods for medical education. The proposal must focus on research, not development, in the assessment of performance or clinical assessment.

February 3, 2014, Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC – Distinguished Academics Awards Nomination Deadline: February 3, 2014 The CUFA BC Distinguished Academics Awards are the brainchild of former CUFA BC President Ehor Boyanowsky (1994-95), who wanted to create a means to demonstrate to the public the importance of the research and scholarly activity carried out by public university professors. February 28, 2014  UBC Faculty of Medicine – The Margolese National Brain & Heart Disorders Prize Deadline: February 28th, 2014 The Margolese National Brain and Heart Disorders Prizes establishes two prizes, one each for Brain Disorders and Heart Disorders. The Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize will be awarded annually to a Canadian citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure of brain disorders. The Margolese National Heart Disorders Prize will be awarded annually to a Canadian citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure of heart disorders.
