FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES:
Mitacs and Own the Podium – Partners for Innovation in High-Performance Sport Research
LOI Deadline: May 15, 2015
Full Application Deadline: June 19, 2015
Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 15 years. Working with 60 universities, thousands of companies, and both federal and provincial governments, we build partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada. One of these partnerships is with Own the Podium (OTP).
OTP and Mitacs developed a partnership through Mitacs’ Accelerate and Elevate programs, which support the brightest PhD and postdoctoral candidates conducting research in high-performance sport. These interns share their time between academic, industrial, and sports facilities tying together the major elements of the Canadian sport-research ecosystem.
All projects must have clear potential for economic impact to Canada and therefore must likely include a Canadian for-profit partner, where the intern will spend at least 25 percent of his/her time.
The current call for projects follows an initial pilot between OTP and Mitacs in 2014-15 that saw the funding of four projects, with a combined value of $200,000+ and each spanned two to three years. Up to 10 projects will be selected for funding in the current round.
For further details, please see the attached call for proposals.
Deadline: June 30, 2015
The Faculty of Medicine has funds available for up to $5000 in start up funding. Applicants must be in the first two years of a full-time faculty appointment as Assistant Professor and higher, or a Clinical faculty appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor and higher in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.  Previous awardees of UBC Faculty of Medicine Spring Start Up Funds, and applicants who have received $200,000 or more in Start Up Funds are ineligible.
The funds can be used for the following: Research equipment, research supplies and/or research services (e.g. cost recovery payments to core equipment) and research support salaries (e.g. technical personnel).

Location: LSC 3, Life Sciences Centre, 2350 Health Sciences Mall, Vancouver
Seminar by:
Dr. Sean Barbour
Assistant Professor, UBC Division of Nephrology
Dysfunction in the alternate pathway of complement is well known to result in atypical HUS. However, comparatively much less attention has been focused on a newly described type of kidney disease called C3 glomerulopathy, which is also due to abnormalities in the alternate pathway of complement. This talk will review the history behind the evolution of C3 glomerulopathy being considered a distinct disease entity from other types of glomerulonephritis, and the clinical presentation, prognosis, complement abnormalities, and treatment of C3 glomerulopathy. Advancing our understanding of C3 glomerulopathy and improving outcome for patients with this severe type of renal disease will require improved collaboraon between clinicians unfamiliar with complement, and scientists unfamiliar with this disease.
Date & Time: August 19, 2015; 12-7pm
Location: West Atrium, Life Sciences Centre, 2350 Health Sciences Mall, Vancouver
Registration is now open for CBR Research Day on August 19, 2015. Please register online here.
Everyone is welcome. So please feel free to forward the attached program and RSVP link to anyone you feel may benefit from attending.
POSTERS! Please indicate on the form if you will be presenting a poster. For pending poster titles mark the field as “TBA.”

ONE DAY @ UBC CENTENNIAL COURSES
As part of the official UBC Centennial celebration, UBC Continuing Studies is offering 10 free One Day @ UBC Centennial courses on Saturdays from September 2015 through May 2016. These One Day @ UBC Centennial Courses are open to anyone over the age of 15 and we expect each course to enroll between 50 and 120 students. Each course is divided into a morning (9:30am to 12:00 noon) and an afternoon session (1pm to 3:30pm).
UBC Continuing Studies is looking for professors and postdoctoral fellows who are willing to share their research/scholarship with the local community by delivering a 2.5 hour lecture/discussion on a Saturday morning or afternoon as part of a One Day @ UBC Centennial course. There is a modest honorarium of $250.
Our goal is to select 20 professors and postdoctoral fellows that collectively provide the local community with a broad representation of the world-class research and scholarship at UBC.
ONE DAY @ UBC (REGULAR EDITION)
In addition to the 10 free Centennial courses, we will also be offering our regular One Day @ UBC courses from September 2015 through May 2016.
Regular One Day @ UBC courses are taught by UBC professors, sessionals and affiliated instructors on Saturdays from 9:30am to 4pm. Each course is usually taught by a single instructor. There is no grading and classes are usually limited to a maximum of 30 students. The small class size provides for a more seminar style learning and teaching experience.
The honorarium for teaching a regular One Day @ UBC course is $600.
If you are interested in delivering a 2.5 hour lecture/discussion as part of a One Day @ UBC Centennial course and/or in teaching a regular One Day @ UBC course, please send an email to Don Black. Please include a course title and short description of your topic.
The deadline for submission for the One Day @ UBC Centennial courses is  May  25, 2015.
The deadline for submission for the regular One Day @ UBC course to be offering in the Fall 2015 term (September through December, 2015) is July 6, 2015.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Don Black or 604-822-1460.
