Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics, Inc. (CFFT), the nonprofit drug discovery and development affiliate of the CF Foundation, offers competitive awards to support clinical research projects directly related to CF treatment and care.

Projects may address diagnostic or therapeutic methods related to CF or the pathophysiology of CF, and applicants must demonstrate access to a sufficient number of CF patients from CF Foundation-accredited care centers and to appropriate controls.

Up to $100,000 per year (plus 8% indirects) for a maximum of three years may be requested for single-center clinical research grants. For multi-center clinical research, the potential award is up to $225,000 per year (plus 8% indirects) for a maximum of three years.

The Weston Brain Institute is delighted to launch its Rapid Response 2015 program to provide seed funding for totally novel, high-risk, high-reward translational research ideas to catalyze the development of safe and effective treatments for neurodegenerative diseases of aging. Each project may receive up to $150,000 over 12-18 months

Applicants must be researchers or postdoctoral fellows, and developing a therapeutic and/or a tool to help accelerate the development of therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases of aging.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation is pleased to announce the Stupski Prize in Prostate Cancer Computational Oncology, a first-in-field initiative designed to attract novel ideas to the field of cancer bioinformatics. These solutions will help clinicians and researchers optimize treatment for individual prostate cancer patients and will likely lead to breakthroughs in other cancers as common molecular drivers are uncovered.

A total of five $25,000 prizes will be awarded over the next two years. Additional details on this initiative may be found in the official press release here.

The inaugural Stupski Prize was awarded to Nikolaus Schultz, PhD, for his work developing the cBioPortal for Cancer Genomics. Future prizes will be awarded as a result of global, crowdsourced competitions. Blood platelets are produced by bone marrow megakaryocytes in a process that requires extensive membrane rearrangements. These include the formation of the demarcation membrane system, the surface‐connected membrane extension that invaginates into the cell body and elaborates to provide membranes for future platelets. Our current research is focused on the cellular mechanisms and membrane binding and deforming proteins involved in the formation of this unique internal membrane system. In this talk, we will highlight our recent efforts to characterize the role of the large GTPase dynamin 2 and the F‐BAR protein PACSIN2 in receptor‐mediated endocytosis required for megakaryocyte development and platelet production.

The SPARC Office is pleased to announce it is once again organizing an NSERC Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) Grants Workshop for UBC researchers interested in applying to this valuable research partnership funding program.

Jeffery Nerenberg, Senior Manager, Research Partnerships, from the NSERC-Ottawa office will be coming to UBC on Monday, May 4th, 2015 to give a presentation, meet with researchers and address any questions you may have related to the NSERC CRD program. In addition to Mr. Nerenberg, some successful UBC CRD applicants will also outline and discuss their experiences with the CRD program.
