October 31, 2013, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – Records for Life: A Design Contest that can Save Lives Deadline: October 31, 2013 The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has launched Records for Life: A Design Contest that can Save Lives. This new grant opportunity seeks individuals or teams to re-examine the current child health record and design new ways to accurately track vaccine doses, increase ease of interpretation and use, and incite behavior change to make the record a valued asset for health professionals and families alike. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada – 2014 Royal College Peter Warren Travelling Scholarship Deadline: September 30, 2013; 5pm EDT 
This new scholarship, offered for the first time in 2014, is intended to encourage post-graduate trainees in medicine to undertake research projects in the history of specialty medicine, the history of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and/or the history of Post-Graduate Medical Education in Canada; and to encourage the use of the Royal College historical and archival collections as a resource for scholarly work within the field of the history of medicine. The details of this award are also available at the website.  Nominations must be received before 5:00 PM (EDT) September 30, 2013 in order to be considered. In keeping with the College’s green initiative, we would request that you submit your nominations electronically to awards@royalcollege.ca.

2014 Canada Gairdner Global Health Award
Nominations are being requested for the 2014 Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, an annual award of $100,000 CND given to an individual scientist who has made “major scientific advances in any one the four areas of basic science, clinical science, or population or environmental health that have or have the potential to make a significant impact on health outcomes in the developing world.
2014 Canada Gairdner International AwardsThis award recognizes outstanding biomedical scientists who have made original contributions to medicine with the goal of contributing through research to increased understanding of human biology and disease. The award recognizes an original, seminal contribution or discovery rather than a lifetime of work.  Gairdner invites the scientific community to nominate qualified scientists from any branch of biomedicine.  Criteria: Nominees should be individuals who’s seminal discoveries and major scientific contributions constitute an original and significant achievement in biomedical science” Nominations in the field of translational research are welcome. CAD $100,000.
2014 Canada Gairdner Wightman Award is presented to a scientist who has demonstrated outstanding national leadership in medicine and medical science in Canada consistent with the purpose of Gairdner.  Criteria:  i) leadership in a specific field of biomedical sciences (basic, clinical, population health) in Canada and/or original and sustained contributions to that field at an internationally recognized level.  ii.) institutional academic and scientific leadership in Canada leading to the establishment and development of biomedical research in Canada and internationally. CAD $100,000. Research Area(s): Health & Life Sciences.

Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) – Lurie Prize in the Biomedical Sciences  In 2014, the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) will present the second annual Lurie Prize, an award recognizing outstanding achievement by a promising young scientist in biomedical research. The Prize amount is $100,000, to be used as the awardee chooses. It is made possible by a generous gift from FNIH board member Ann Lurie. Nominations are to be for an outstanding young biomedical investigator, who must be 52 years of age or younger as of January 1, 2014.

Wolf Prize – Wolf Foundation:  Since 1978, The Wolf Prize has been awarded to outstanding scientists and artists–irrespective of nationality, race, color, religion, sex or political views–for achievements in the interest of mankind and friendly relations among peoples; International prize committees in each field, comprising renowned experts, select the Wolf Prize winners.  The 2014 cycle is accepting candidate nominations from the field of medicine, among other categories.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund – Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Faculty of Medicine Internal Deadline: 
October 18, 2013 Deadline: November 1, 2013; Five-year awards provide $500,000 to support accomplished investigators at the assistant professor level to study pathogenesis, with a focus on the interplay between human and microbial biology, shedding light on how human and microbial systems are affected by their encounters. The awards are intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to pursue new avenues of inquiry and higher-risk research projects that hold potential for significantly advancing the biochemical, pharmacological, immunological, and molecular biological understanding of how microbes and the human body interact.

Warren Alpert Foundation Prize:
 The Warren Alpert Foundation Prize recognizes one or more scientists whose scientific achievements have led to the prevention, cure or treatment of human diseases or disorders, and/or whose research constitutes a seminal scientific finding that holds great promise of ultimately changing our understanding of and/or ability to treat disease. The $250,000 Prize is open to scientists, physicians, and researchers from any country. Nominations must be received by November 1, 2013.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society – The New Idea Award LOI Deadline: November 1, 2013 The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is proud to announce our second year of The New Idea Award, a grant program designed to identify novel research strategies with high potential for high impact on the future of blood cancer treatment(s).  Specifically, this program supports academic researchers with innovative ideas for approaches that are substantially different from standard therapies and prognostic/diagnostic modalities, as well as ideas that may fundamentally change our understanding of blood cancer(s).  Grants will be awarded in an amount of up to $100,000 for a one year grant period. Alex’s Lemonade Stand – Innovation Award LOI Deadline: November 11th, 2013 Do you have a high risk idea that has potential for high impact on pediatric cancer patients? Does your idea, approach, or methodology have the potential to move your research and the field in a new direction? ALSF's Innovation Award provides seed funding for proof-of-concept proposals. The award is $250,000 over two years. Notification will be sent early January 2014. Upon invitation, the full application will be due March 3, 2014. Please review the application guidelines.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand – Young Investigator Award Deadline: 
December 16th, 2013 ALSF is committed to the next generation of pediatric cancer investigators! The Young Investigator Award provides start-up funds for new scientists at the end of their fellowship training or early in their research career. Developing an impactful line of research and a sustainable career in pediatric oncology research are key components of this grant program. The award is $100,000 over two years.  Please review the application guidelines.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand – Epidemiology Grants Deadline: December 16th, 2013; ALSF provides funding that will allow investigators to pursue novel and promising epidemiological approaches to understanding childhood cancers. New in 2014, we have expanded our eligible areas of investigation to include comparative effectiveness and outcomes research. Proposals for evaluating effectiveness of interventions related to prevention, detection and treatment of childhood cancer will be considered. Maximum $100,000 of direct costs will be awarded to applicants annually and a maximum of two years of funding may be requested. Please review the application guidelines.
