UBC Faculty of Medicine – Dr. Chew Wei Memorial Prize in Cancer Research. The Inaugural Dr. Chew Wei MBBS [HK] FRCOG [ENG] Memorial Prize in Cancer Research establishes a prize to a physician or scientist – whether in academia, government, non-profit organizations, or the private sector – who has made a transformational, internationally recognized contribution to the fight against cancer, with an emphasis on researchers whose achievements span the spectrum of health research, from the laboratory to clinical care to health systems and public policy. Commencing in 2014, one prize of CDN $50,000.00 will be awarded annually to a Canadian who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure for cancer.  Deadline: August 30, 2013 4:00pm PDT.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund – Career Awards at the Scientific Interface Deadline: Sep 3, 2013 by 4:00pm EDT
BWF’s Career Awards at the Scientific Interface provide $500,000 to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of faculty service. These awards are intended to foster the early career development of researchers who have transitioned or are transitioning from undergraduate and/or graduate work in the physical/mathematical/computational sciences or engineering into postdoctoral work in the biological sciences, and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. These awards are open to U.S. and Canadian citizens or permanent residents as well as to U.S. temporary residents.

International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders – 2013 Call for Applications Deadline: September 3, 2013. 
The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders is seeking proposals for innovative research projects related to idiopathic gastroparesis. Grants of $40,000 each will be awarded to three investigators for research in humans that ultimately leads to improvements in the understanding of idiopathic gastroparesis, its pathophysiology, and the care of patients. Priority will be given to clinical research, as well as basic research that is translational in nature.

CIHR September 2013 Operating Grant FoM Internal Deadline:  September 10, 2013 The CIHR Open Operating Grant Program (OOGP) provides operating funds to support research proposals in all areas of health research including randomized controlled trials. The mandate of CIHR is to excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system (Bill C-13, April 13, 2000).  Priority Announcements offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific research priority areas or CIHR Institute mandates. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation – “A” Awards Deadline: September 16, 2013 
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation awards grants designed to fill critical voids in pediatric cancer research. The foundation’s “A” Award is a three-year grant designed for young scientists who want to jump-start their careers in pediatric oncology research. The program seeks to encourage the best and brightest young researchers looking to conduct further research on cures for children with cancer and become leaders in the pediatric cancer field. Applicants must have their M.D., Ph.D., or dual M.D./Ph.D., and must not have achieved an appointment higher than assistant professor. M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. candidates must be no more than six years from finishing a three-year fellowship. M.D. candidates who did not do a three-year fellowship must have three years of research experience after their M.D. was awarded and be no more than nine years from receiving the M.D. Ph.D. candidates must be no more than six years from being awarded the Ph.D.

September 17, 2013 Deadline:  October 1, 2013.  Five-year $700,000 awards for physician-scientists to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible. Awards are made to degree-granting institutions in the U.S. or Canada on behalf of the awardee.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada – 2014 Royal College Peter Warren Travelling Scholarship Deadline: September 30, 2013; 5pm EDT
This new scholarship, offered for the first time in 2014, is intended to encourage post-graduate trainees in medicine to undertake research projects in the history of specialty medicine, the history of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and/or the history of Post-Graduate Medical Education in Canada; and to encourage the use of the Royal College historical and archival collections as a resource for scholarly work within the field of the history of medicine. 2014 Canada Gairdner Global Health Award
Nominations are being requested for the 2014 Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, an annual award of $100,000 CND given to an individual scientist who has made “major scientific advances in any one the four areas of basic science, clinical science, or population or environmental health that have or have the potential to make a significant impact on health outcomes in the developing world.
2014 Canada Gairdner International AwardsThis award recognizes outstanding biomedical scientists who have made original contributions to medicine with the goal of contributing through research to increased understanding of human biology and disease. The award recognizes an original, seminal contribution or discovery rather than a lifetime of work.  Gairdner invites the scientific community to nominate qualified scientists from any branch of biomedicine.  Criteria: Nominees should be individuals who’s seminal discoveries and major scientific contributions constitute an original and significant achievement in biomedical science” Nominations in the field of translational research are welcome. CAD $100,000.
2014 Canada Gairdner Wightman Award is presented to a scientist who has demonstrated outstanding national leadership in medicine and medical science in Canada consistent with the purpose of Gairdner.  Criteria:  i) leadership in a specific field of biomedical sciences (basic, clinical, population health) in Canada and/or original and sustained contributions to that field at an internationally recognized level.  ii.) institutional academic and scientific leadership in Canada leading to the establishment and development of biomedical research in Canada and internationally. CAD $100,000. Research Area(s): Health & Life Sciences.
Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) – Lurie Prize in the Biomedical Sciences  In 2014, the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) will present the second annual Lurie Prize, an award recognizing outstanding achievement by a promising young scientist in biomedical research. The Prize amount is $100,000, to be used as the awardee chooses. It is made possible by a generous gift from FNIH board member Ann Lurie. Nominations are to be for an outstanding young biomedical investigator, who must be 52 years of age or younger as of January 1, 2014.
Wolf Prize – Wolf Foundation:  Since 1978, The Wolf Prize has been awarded to outstanding scientists and artists–irrespective of nationality, race, color, religion, sex or political views–for achievements in the interest of mankind and friendly relations among peoples; International prize committees in each field, comprising renowned experts, select the Wolf Prize winners.  The 2014 cycle is accepting candidate nominations from the field of medicine, among other categories.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund – Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Faculty of Medicine Internal Deadline:
October 18, 2013 Deadline: November 1, 2013; Five-year awards provide $500,000 to support accomplished investigators at the assistant professor level to study pathogenesis, with a focus on the interplay between human and microbial biology, shedding light on how human and microbial systems are affected by their encounters. The awards are intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to pursue new avenues of inquiry and higher-risk research projects that hold potential for significantly advancing the biochemical, pharmacological, immunological, and molecular biological understanding of how microbes and the human body interact.

Warren Alpert Foundation Prize:
The Warren Alpert Foundation Prize recognizes one or more scientists whose scientific achievements have led to the prevention, cure or treatment of human diseases or disorders, and/or whose research constitutes a seminal scientific finding that holds great promise of ultimately changing our understanding of and/or ability to treat disease. The $250,000 Prize is open to scientists, physicians, and researchers from any country. Nominations must be received by November 1, 2013.
