UBC Faculty of Medicine – Dr. Chew Wei Memorial Prize in Cancer Research. The Inaugural Dr. Chew Wei MBBS [HK] FRCOG [ENG] Memorial Prize in Cancer Research establishes a prize to a physician or scientist – whether in academia, government, non-profit organizations, or the private sector – who has made a transformational, internationally recognized contribution to the fight against cancer, with an emphasis on researchers whose achievements span the spectrum of health research, from the laboratory to clinical care to health systems and public policy. Commencing in 2014, one prize of CDN $50,000.00 will be awarded annually to a Canadian who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure for cancer.  Deadline: August 30, 2013 4:00pm PDT.

International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders – 2013 Call for Applications Deadline: September 3, 2013. 
The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders is seeking proposals for innovative research projects related to idiopathic gastroparesis. Grants of $40,000 each will be awarded to three investigators for research in humans that ultimately leads to improvements in the understanding of idiopathic gastroparesis, its pathophysiology, and the care of patients. Priority will be given to clinical research, as well as basic research that is translational in nature.

CIHR September 2013 Operating Grant FoM Internal Deadline:  September 10, 2013 The CIHR Open Operating Grant Program (OOGP) provides operating funds to support research proposals in all areas of health research including randomized controlled trials. The mandate of CIHR is to excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system (Bill C-13, April 13, 2000).  Priority Announcements offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific research priority areas or CIHR Institute mandates. Applications are submitted through the Fall 2013 Open Operating Grant: 2013-2014 funding opportunity. Priority announcement details can be found here.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation – “A” Awards Deadline: September 16, 2013 
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation awards grants designed to fill critical voids in pediatric cancer research. The foundation’s “A” Award is a three-year grant designed for young scientists who want to jump-start their careers in pediatric oncology research. The program seeks to encourage the best and brightest young researchers looking to conduct further research on cures for children with cancer and become leaders in the pediatric cancer field. Applicants must have their M.D., Ph.D., or dual M.D./Ph.D., and must not have achieved an appointment higher than assistant professor. M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. candidates must be no more than six years from finishing a three-year fellowship. M.D. candidates who did not do a three-year fellowship must have three years of research experience after their M.D. was awarded and be no more than nine years from receiving the M.D. Ph.D. candidates must be no more than six years from being awarded the Ph.D.

2014 Canada Gairdner Global Health Award
Nominations are being requested for the 2014 Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, an annual award of $100,000 CND given to an individual scientist who has made “major scientific advances in any one the four areas of basic science, clinical science, or population or environmental health that have or have the potential to make a significant impact on health outcomes in the developing world.
2014 Canada Gairdner International AwardsThis award recognizes outstanding biomedical scientists who have made original contributions to medicine with the goal of contributing through research to increased understanding of human biology and disease. The award recognizes an original, seminal contribution or discovery rather than a lifetime of work.  Gairdner invites the scientific community to nominate qualified scientists from any branch of biomedicine.  Criteria: Nominees should be individuals who’s seminal discoveries and major scientific contributions constitute an original and significant achievement in biomedical science” Nominations in the field of translational research are welcome. CAD $100,000.
2014 Canada Gairdner Wightman Award is presented to a scientist who has demonstrated outstanding national leadership in medicine and medical science in Canada consistent with the purpose of Gairdner.  Criteria:  i) leadership in a specific field of biomedical sciences (basic, clinical, population health) in Canada and/or original and sustained contributions to that field at an internationally recognized level.  ii.) institutional academic and scientific leadership in Canada leading to the establishment and development of biomedical research in Canada and internationally. CAD $100,000. Research Area(s): Health & Life Sciences.
