November 15, 2013, 7:30 p.m., Upcoming fundraiser; Manchester Pub: Help the pediatric residents raise funds for one of their partnership projects on Northwestern rural Bangladesh! Dr. Katie Mitchell (peds R4) and Dr. Katrina Stockley (peds R3) are raising money for the LAMB hospital general pediatrics department in Parbatipur, Bangladesh (www.lambproject.org), a hospital that hosts UBC pediatric residents on extended 3-6 month international electives and where Katrina will be working from January-April 2014. The hospital is greatly in need of funds to purchase medical supplies (e.g. umbilical catheters, phototherapy lights, autoclavable resuscitation equipment) and provide training to community health workers on topics such as kangaroo mother care. We are raffling off a pair of Canucks tickets to the November 22nd 7:30pm Vancouver vs. Columbus game (season’s ticket holder seats, face value 350$ for the pair). Raffle tickets are 5$ for one ticket or 10$ for 3 tickets, and the winner will be drawn on November 15th. Join us on Friday November 15th at 7:30pm at the Manchester Pub for our social pub night fundraiser – tickets are 20$ and include a burger and beer, with 5$ from each ticket going towards the LAMB project. UBC Postdoctoral Fellows Office – Killam Postdoctoral Fellow Research Prize Internal Deadline: November 22nd, 2013; As part of UBC’s ongoing efforts to increase the benefits for Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs), the Postdoctoral Fellows Office (PDFO) is pleased to announce the 2014 Killam PDF Prize, an opportunity to recognize and reward. The Killam PDF Prize is in memory of Izaak Walton Killam and his wife, Dorothy Johnston Killam, who together created the Killam trusts. The internal deadline for the Faculty of Medicine is 4:00pm November 22nd. A top candidate will then be selected from the Faculty for the final competition; this candidate’s application will then be submitted to the UBC Postdoctoral Fellows Office for the December 13, 2013 deadline. Canadian Medical Association (CMA) – 2014 CMA Awards Deadline: November 30, 2013. The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) invites nominations for its 2014 CMA Awards. The CMA has 13 awards to recognize the dedication, successes and talents of Canadian men and women who have made significant contributions in a number of different spheres. Three of the 13 awards pertain to research accomplishments – Medal of Honour, William Marsden, and Young Leaders. Alex’s Lemonade Stand – Young Investigator Award Deadline: December 16th, 2013 ALSF is committed to the next generation of pediatric cancer investigators! The Young Investigator Award provides start-up funds for new scientists at the end of their fellowship training or early in their research career. Developing an impactful line of research and a sustainable career in pediatric oncology research are key components of this grant program. The award is $100,000 over two years. Alex’s Lemonade Stand – Epidemiology Grants Deadline: December 16th, 2013; ALSF provides funding that will allow investigators to pursue novel and promising epidemiological approaches to understanding childhood cancers. New in 2014, we have expanded our eligible areas of investigation to include comparative effectiveness and outcomes research. Proposals for evaluating effectiveness of interventions related to prevention, detection and treatment of childhood cancer will be considered. Maximum $100,000 of direct costs will be awarded to applicants annually and a maximum of two years of funding may be requested. Please review the application guidelines.

February 28, 2014 UBC Faculty of Medicine – The Margolese National Brain & Heart Disorders Prize Deadline: February 28th, 2014 The Margolese National Brain and Heart Disorders Prizes establishes two prizes, one each for Brain Disorders and Heart Disorders. The Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize will be awarded annually to a Canadian citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure of brain disorders. The Margolese National Heart Disorders Prize will be awarded annually to a Canadian citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure of heart disorders. The Prizes are awarded with the expectation that the Prize recipients will continue to demonstrate excellence in their field of work.
